Sacred Dancing

Last Monday's belly dance class members responded with great enthusiasm to an introduction to Nritya Yoga, or the yoga of dance.

The 12 hours of intense study and practice with Amrita Choudhury, who created nritya yoga after meeting one of the last living temple dancers in India's Orissa province, were amazing and I was eager to share what I am now integrating into my own yoga and dance practice. Nevertheless, I didn't know how the class would view a pretty big shift from what we've been doing for the last few years when we meet in Chiro-Java on Monday evenings.

The dancers in our class liked what we did... and asked for more. So, bring a veil if you're coming to class tomorrow!

Dance is a sacred practice for me -- meditation, prayer, celebration of the beauty and grace in each of us -- so I am glad to have the opportunity to share more of the global vocabulary with dancers in Seguin.

By opening our minds to explore Middle Eastern dancing, Indian sacred dancing or yoga, we are participating in the dream that Amrita imbibed as a student in Santiniketan in Northeastern India, and that inspires Ananda-Amrita Dance Creations

...where people from all over the world could work together in a common pursuit of truth, share our common heritage and realize that artists in all parts of the world have created forms of beauty, scientists discovered secrets of the universe, philosoophers solved the problems of existence, saints made the truth of the spiritual world organic in their lives, not merely for some particular race to which they belong, but for all mankind.

I have taken Nritya Yoga for 2 semesters with Amrita Choudhury and it is just wonderful! I saw your post and thought I would just ask you if you are teaching Nritya Yoga without a teacher's certificate, because Amrita Choudhury does offer one. Nritya Yoga has several Indian Classical dance techniques, meditation and yoga techniques and ancient Indian sacred and trance dance techniques...one movement requires 6 different techniques and layers of technique..after more than 25 years of mastery in the Indian arts, Amrita created this extensive complex program which has levels 1, 2 and 3....it requires a long process of dedication, practice and discipine to teach it properly, ......and it is available...so you can check with her on that...I know that your intentions are pure but I also know that she would not appreciate individuals teaching Nritya Yoga unless they are properly trained to do so....if I have misunderstood your blog then my sincere apologies....

To the Anonymous critic:

First, it's not very brave to take someone to task without identifying yourself.

Second, the photos depict a seminar Amrita Choudhoury taught in Austin. I would gladly take more classes with Amrita and have continued to work with her DVD after the workshop.

Third, I do not teach nritya yoga, poorly or otherwise. I did, however, share one dance and some other movements with students of belly dance. Ms. Choudhoury did not mention a prohibition on talking about what we learned in the workshop or on sharing movements. I wouldn't want to offend her, but wouldn't it be nice if others were inspired to study with her because they heard that I had a wonderful experience in her workshop?
