Sacred Dancing

Last Monday's belly dance class members responded with great enthusiasm to an introduction to Nritya Yoga, or the yoga of dance.

The 12 hours of intense study and practice with Amrita Choudhury, who created nritya yoga after meeting one of the last living temple dancers in India's Orissa province, were amazing and I was eager to share what I am now integrating into my own yoga and dance practice. Nevertheless, I didn't know how the class would view a pretty big shift from what we've been doing for the last few years when we meet in Chiro-Java on Monday evenings.

The dancers in our class liked what we did... and asked for more. So, bring a veil if you're coming to class tomorrow!

Dance is a sacred practice for me -- meditation, prayer, celebration of the beauty and grace in each of us -- so I am glad to have the opportunity to share more of the global vocabulary with dancers in Seguin.

By opening our minds to explore Middle Eastern dancing, Indian sacred dancing or yoga, we are participating in the dream that Amrita imbibed as a student in Santiniketan in Northeastern India, and that inspires Ananda-Amrita Dance Creations

...where people from all over the world could work together in a common pursuit of truth, share our common heritage and realize that artists in all parts of the world have created forms of beauty, scientists discovered secrets of the universe, philosoophers solved the problems of existence, saints made the truth of the spiritual world organic in their lives, not merely for some particular race to which they belong, but for all mankind.

Spring Classes

Belly Dance class will not meet during TLU's spring break, which includes two Mondays. That means no class March 17 and 24.

Class WILL meet at 7 p.m. on the Mondays from March 31-April 21 at ChiroJava.

I will be attending a Dance and Yoga workshop the last weekend in March, and I'm sure I'll be brimming with new things to share.

Yoga class will meet for the third time of an eight-week session at noon March 11.

The first Doga class ever in Seguin will meet at 6 p.m. Friday, March 14 at Thunderpaws Canine Solutions. If you are interested in doing yoga with your dog (and laughing a lot, I imagine), please call Thunderpaws for information. 830-379-7000

Recent News

A group of about a dozen women and girls has come to each of the classes in the new session at ChiroJava. We are listening to chiftetelli rhythms this session to branch out from the basic 4/4 beledi and masmoudi we hear in most of the Arabic pop. This rhythm is a little more complicated and is challenging for the students who've been coming to class for the last couple of years (yeah all of you!!!).

Silk and Saffron is branching out into yoga!

We have a Tuesday lunchtime class in the works and a Friday evening doggie yoga class that we'll offer at Thunderpaws Canine Solutions ( a block from ChiroJava).

The Tuesday class (and, I hope some other classes) will be at Southwest Pride, 607 Jefferson Avenue in Seguin. Tuesday's class is for people only and is planned to start Feb. 26. We'll have blankets, blocks and some other props on hand. Students will need their own yoga mats.
